In Focus: Transference exhibit, Atlanta, GA

Writer: Drea MillsDrea Mills

I was invited to participate in a group photography exhibit, curated by The Bakery Atlanta, and hosted by The Supermarket (a gallery in Poncey-Highland, Atlanta). "In Focus: Transference" explores how we use photography to transfer our feelings and emotions, just as people do with a therapist. For this exhibit, I chose a self-portrait that I had taken when I was feeling disconnected from not only reality, but from myself. The mirror is a powerful tool in spirituality and healing rituals. The mirror creates the illusion of 2 different people. The photo captures the disconnection I was feeling, while at the same time showing a reconnection with Self.

I've always been a little odd (LoL). So, I grew up hiding my thoughts, feelings, and emotions for fear of being judged or not being accepted. The thing about photography is it doesn't allow you to hide. Photography requires authenticity, which forces you to be vulnerable. I've had to learn to accept and love ALL facets of what makes me ME, because I am my own muse. I am the artwork. . The theme of this exhibit resonated so deeply for me. It's been cathartic learning who I am as a photographer, and I am leaning more into it the more I shoot. I can't wait for more amazing opportunities to show it to the world.
